ABAKALIKI – The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has set the stage for a major political shake-up by approving a referendum for the creation of 12 additional Local Government Areas (LGAs). The move, lawmakers say, is aimed at bringing governance closer to the people, ensuring fairer resource distribution, and addressing population imbalances across the state.
If approved, this expansion will increase Ebonyi’s LGAs from 13 to 25, a significant restructuring expected to boost development and improve service delivery at the grassroots level.
New LGAs on the Horizon
The proposed LGAs include:
Ikwo South and Ikwo North (from Ikwo LGA)
Ekumenyi (from Abakaliki LGA)
Ebyia (from Izzi LGA)
Ndiagbo (from Edda LGA)
Ishielu South (from Ishielu LGA)
Akaeze, Ukaba, and Effium (from Ivo, Onicha, and Ohaukwu LGAs)
Izzikworo, Amohai, and Imoha (from Ezza-South, Ezza-North, and Afikpo LGAs)
Lawmakers unanimously endorsed the decision during plenary at the State Legislative Complex, with Chief Whip Hon. Prince Nkemka Okoro-Onuma (Edda West) leading the motion, seconded by Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu (Ikwo North).
Once officially gazetted, these new LGAs are expected to drive economic growth, improve governance, and ensure equitable access to state resources.
In a related development, the Assembly also advanced a bill for the establishment of the Ebonyi State Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission, aimed at fostering inclusivity and representation.
