The Nigerian military has reassured citizens that uniformed personnel are not threats but protectors, urging the public to feel safe in their presence. Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations at the Defence Headquarters, made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program on Friday.

Bankole emphasized that the military is built on the principles of service, protection, and integrity. “People should not feel scared when they see men in uniform; they are meant to protect you. This sensitization starts from training academies like the Depot in Zaria, the NDA, and the NDC,” he stated.

Highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen military-civilian relations, he noted that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, is committed to restoring public confidence in the armed forces.

Military Reacts to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Incident

Addressing concerns over a recent incident involving military personnel at the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), Bankole assured Nigerians that the matter is under serious review. He acknowledged that while there were underlying issues, the misconduct seen in viral footage does not reflect the true character of the military.

“The Defence Headquarters and the Nigerian Air Force are taking this case seriously. Appropriate sanctions will be imposed on those found guilty. There is zero tolerance for such behavior, and all necessary corrective actions are being implemented,” he affirmed.

Building Trust: Military Calls for Stronger Civilian Cooperation

Reiterating the importance of a strong relationship between the military and civilians, Bankole emphasized that public cooperation, particularly in intelligence gathering, is essential for national security.

“The military is here to protect you always. We are stepping up sensitization efforts to ensure Nigerians understand our role and feel safe around us,” he added.

As the armed forces continue their mission of safeguarding Nigeria, citizens are encouraged to engage positively with the military, fostering trust and collaboration for a more secure nation.
