Russian President Vladimir Putin has doubled down on his aggressive stance against Ukraine, calling for a “transitional administration” to replace Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and vowing that Russian forces will “finish off” Ukrainian troops. His remarks come amid efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to broker a ceasefire.

Speaking at an Arctic forum, Putin proposed international discussions—under the United Nations’ guidance—to establish a temporary government in Ukraine. He claimed this move would allow for a “democratic” presidential election to bring in a new leadership capable of negotiating peace.

Putin also repeated his call for Ukraine’s military to overthrow Zelensky, a leader he has frequently labeled a “neo-Nazi” and “drug addict” without evidence. The Kremlin has questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy after his term officially ended in May 2024, despite Ukrainian law suspending elections during wartime.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has accused Russia of repeatedly attacking energy infrastructure, despite Moscow’s claims of a “moratorium” on such strikes. On the battlefield, Russian forces have reported new territorial gains, intensifying pressure on Ukraine.

While Washington and Moscow engage in diplomatic discussions, Ukraine insists that Russia is using the talks to stall while continuing its military offensive. The Kremlin has also blamed European leaders for blocking progress on peace efforts, citing their refusal to ease sanctions on Russian banks.

With tensions at a boiling point, Putin’s latest remarks signal that the war is far from over, raising concerns about further escalation and prolonged bloodshed.
