Real Madrid’s iconic coach, Carlo Ancelotti, is set to face trial next week over accusations of tax fraud, with Spanish prosecutors pushing for a four-year and nine-month prison sentence. The 65-year-old Italian is alleged to have concealed over €1 million ($1.1 million) in earnings from image rights between 2014 and 2015, according to a Madrid court’s statement on Friday.
Ancelotti’s Alleged Tax Evasion Scheme
Authorities claim that Ancelotti, despite declaring himself a tax resident in Spain during his time at Real Madrid, failed to report income beyond his direct salary from the club. Prosecutors argue that he established a “complex and confusing” network of shell companies to hide additional revenue from image rights, real estate, and other sources.
The trial is scheduled to begin on Wednesday and will last for two days. Court officials confirmed that the legendary coach must be physically present for the hearings.
Ancelotti’s Response & Legal Battle
Ancelotti, who has won a record five Champions League titles as a coach, including three with Real Madrid, has previously dismissed the case as “an old story” and expressed confidence in a swift resolution.
The Spanish court initially ruled 2023 that Ancelotti should stand trial, but the date was only recently set. The case adds to the long list of tax controversies involving top football figures in Spain, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and José Mourinho.
