The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), has strongly condemned the horrific killing of travellers in Uromi, Edo State, calling it a wake-up call for security agencies across the nation. The victims, a group of hunters travelling from Port Harcourt, were mobbed and brutally murdered by a vigilante group after being falsely accused of criminal activities. Their vehicle was also set on fire in the shocking attack.

In a statement released late Friday, Osigwe denounced the act of vigilante justice, expressing deep concern over the growing trend of mobs taking the law into their own hands rather than involving law enforcement. He described the lynching of the travellers as “barbaric” and emphasized that no individual, regardless of the alleged crime, should ever be subjected to such violence.

“This tragic event highlights a disturbing pattern of mob justice that continues to plague our society. It is deeply troubling that suspects are attacked and lynched without any intervention from law enforcement agencies. Every accused person deserves the right to a fair investigation and, if necessary, prosecution in a court of law,” Osigwe stated, underscoring the critical need to uphold the rule of law in Nigeria.

Osigwe’s statement called for urgent action from law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent similar crimes in the future. He further urged the Edo State Government and security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the Uromi killings, ensuring those responsible are held accountable.

“The murder of these innocent travellers must not go unpunished. This tragic incident should serve as a reminder to security agencies that swift and decisive action is necessary to deter mob violence and uphold justice,” he added.

The NBA President also expressed his condolences to the grieving families of the deceased, offering prayers for their peace and comfort during this devastating time. He concluded by reaffirming that vigilante justice has no place in a society governed by law, calling on all Nigerians to reject violence and demand accountability.

As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for stronger security measures and adherence to the rule of law in Nigeria.
