The 6th edition of the Orodje of Okpe Golf Tournament was nothing short of spectacular, with Gagophine Ogaga stealing the show at the Sapele Athletic Club (SAC) Golf Section in Delta State. Playing off a handicap of 2 (hcp 2), Ogaga delivered a stunning 65 net to claim the overall championship title.
In the ladies’ category, it was a dominant performance from Lady Captain Lucky Akpieyi (hcp 16), who secured victory with a net score of 74. Blessing Okafor (hcp 36) and Isioma Esumeh (hcp 31) finished second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, John Okojie (hcp 2) took home the Best Gross award with an impressive 73 gross.
The men’s category saw Akpos Asagba (hcp 16) edge out the competition with 82 net, while Obioma Ochulor (hcp 24) claimed second place with 93 net, ahead of Eguonor Ekpruke (hcp 26), who finished third with a score of 100.
The grand closing ceremony, marking the end of the two-day tournament sponsored by Seplat Energy, was attended by dignitaries, including the Orodje of Okpe, HRM Orhue 1, Major Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (rtd.), represented by his Prime Minister, Chief Michael Affe, alongside Okpe Kingdom chiefs and corporate representatives.
SAC Golf Section Captain Alexander Verhees expressed gratitude to the monarch for his unwavering support in promoting the tournament and to the sponsors and organizing committee, led by Dr. Edward Carpe, for ensuring a successful event.
In the veterans’ category, Kofi Adjekuko (hcp 12) claimed the men’s title with 80 net, followed by Eric Esiri (hcp 20) and Rueben Mgbodi Esq. (hcp 28). The super veteran men’s and ladies’ events turned into a family affair, with Chief Faith Gbagi securing victory over Pa Amos Edoriagba in the men’s division, while his wife, Chief Mrs. Oke Gbagi, triumphed in the ladies’ category.
For the guest players, P. Omoruaye and D. Okoh emerged victorious in the men’s and ladies’ categories with identical 62 net scores. Roland Ukpodor (64 net) and O. Orogun (73 net) topped the guest veteran men’s and ladies’ categories, respectively.
Additional highlights included John Okojie and S. Monica winning the longest drive awards for men and ladies, while Emmanuel Erukunuakpo claimed the nearest-the-pin men’s trophy.
The tournament once again cemented its status as a premier golfing event, showcasing both skill and sportsmanship while placing Sapele on the golfing map.
