The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, took swift action on Monday, conducting a proactive security patrol across the state, underscoring his commitment to maintaining peace and public safety. One of the key stops during his patrol was the site of a devastating fire that engulfed a warehouse and two buildings on Ifejirika Street in Nwangene, Onitsha, on Friday.

During his visit, Orutugu conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the fire scene, expressing his sympathy over the tragic incident. He assured the public that the police were dedicated to ensuring that personnel deployed in the area were actively working to deter crime and maintain safety around the market. The CP also proposed organizing a meeting with market and warehouse owners, alongside other relevant stakeholders, to implement measures that would prevent such incidents in the future.

“This visit is to assess the situation firsthand. As a force, we deeply regret the unfortunate fire, and we will work with all stakeholders to put preventive measures in place,” Orutugu said.

The CP also visited the Fegge Divisional Police Headquarters, where he addressed some ongoing issues, including directing the immediate release of two suspects detained over a minor offense.

In a show of solidarity, the Onitsha Bus Drivers Association expressed their full support for the police command’s efforts to improve security and safety in Onitsha, especially as the city witnesses the return of full-scale economic activities. Orutugu also visited the head of the Northern community in Anambra to promote inclusivity and unity among the residents, reinforcing the importance of harmony for maintaining peace in the state.

During the patrol, the CP visited several strategic areas, including the Main Market Divisional Headquarters, Building Materials market, and the Onitsha Headbridge. He reiterated that the command would continue utilizing community policing principles to foster trust and collaboration between the police and the public.

Traders affected by the fire shared their heartbreaking losses with journalists. Mrs. Chinonso Nwokearu revealed she lost goods worth N220 million, while Ezeji Kelechi estimated his losses at N170 million.
