Lagos commuters were thrown into panic on Thursday morning when a LAGFERRY boat suddenly caught fire at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, leaving several passengers injured.
The incident, which happened around 6:00 a.m., came amid increased reliance on water transportation due to the closure of Independence Bridge at Ahmadu Bello Way, Marina. While no fatalities have been confirmed, the cause of the fire remains unknown as investigations continue.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
Swift action by emergency responders ensured all passengers were safely evacuated. The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed the incident in a statement, identifying the affected vessel as Igbega Eko, which was en route to Victoria Island.
“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team, alongside LAGFERRY, boat operators, and other first responders, promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation,” the statement read.
Four passengers reportedly sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of the fire, reassuring the public that safety remains a top priority.
“Safety is our utmost concern, and we are committed to strengthening fire prevention measures across Lagos waterways,” LASWA stated.
Ferry services remain operational, with authorities urging passengers to stay calm and follow safety guidelines as investigations progress.
