The United States is on track to host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup as the only official bidder, while the United Kingdom is set to stage the tournament in 2035, according to FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Speaking at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade, Infantino confirmed that the USA’s bid may include other CONCACAF nations, while the 2035 edition will be hosted by Europe’s home nations—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Women’s World Cup Expanding to 48 Teams by 2031
In a major development, FIFA also announced plans to expand the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams starting with the 2031 tournament, mirroring the expansion of the men’s competition.
This decision follows last month’s confirmation that FIFA would only accept bids for the 2035 tournament from Europe or Africa, ultimately paving the way for the UK’s successful candidacy.
What Happened to Other Bidders?
Initially, South Africa and Morocco were in the running for 2031, but Infantino’s statement suggests they are now out of contention. Meanwhile, the USA—already set to co-host the 2026 Men’s World Cup with Mexico and Canada—has doubled down on its commitment to host another global football spectacle.
Before these future tournaments, the next Women’s World Cup will take place in Brazil in 2027, setting the stage for a new era of women’s football on a global scale.
