New Temple in Flagstaff Announced by LDS Church: What You Need to Know
On April 6, 2025, President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints revealed a new addition to Arizona’s growing temple network: the Flagstaff Arizona Temple. This announcement was part of a larger revelation during the church’s general conference, where President Nelson revealed plans for a total of 15 new temples worldwide.
The Flagstaff temple will be the ninth temple in Arizona once completed and represents the church’s ongoing commitment to expanding its reach across the globe. This temple announcement follows two others for the state: one in Yuma and another in Queen Creek. Together, these three temples reflect the LDS Church’s accelerated temple-building efforts, which have become a hallmark of President Nelson’s leadership since he began his presidency in 2018, during which he has announced 200 temples globally.
Expansion of LDS Temples in Arizona
The new Flagstaff temple will further strengthen Arizona’s temple network, which already includes a number of sacred sites. Currently, the state boasts six functioning temples:
- Flagstaff Arizona Temple (upcoming)
- Gila Valley Arizona Temple
- Gilbert Arizona Temple
- Mesa Arizona Temple
- Phoenix Arizona Temple
- Snowflake Arizona Temple
- Tucson Arizona Temple
- Queen Creek Arizona Temple (planned)
- Yuma Arizona Temple (planned)
With these additions, Arizona will soon become home to nine temples, making it a hub for Latter-day Saint worship in the region.
A Rich LDS History in Arizona
The LDS Church has deep roots in Arizona, with its first settlers arriving in Mesa in 1877. The construction of the Mesa Arizona Temple, which was completed in 1927 after eight years of work, marked a major milestone for the church in the state. For decades, Mesa members had to travel to the St. George Temple in Utah, but the Mesa temple provided a local place of worship for thousands.
Since then, the state has seen the development of additional temples in Snowflake, Gilbert, Gila Valley, Phoenix, and Tucson. These developments reflect the growing presence of the LDS Church and its commitment to serving members across the state.
What’s Next for Arizona and Beyond?
The church’s expanding temple network isn’t limited to Arizona. Across the world, the LDS Church announced new temples in locations as diverse as Reynosa, Mexico; Chorrillos, Peru; Porto, Portugal; and Uyo, Nigeria. These global developments showcase the worldwide reach of the church, as temples serve as central places for worship and spiritual growth for millions of Latter-day Saints.
The Flagstaff Arizona Temple is part of this global expansion, as President Nelson continues to emphasize the importance of temple worship. In his remarks, he expressed gratitude for the acceleration in temple construction in recent years, and members of the Arizona community are already looking forward to this new sacred space.
