For the first time in over a decade, Manchester United is heading back to Hong Kong—and fans across Asia are already buzzing. The club announced Tuesday that it will play friendly matches in Malaysia and Hong Kong just three days after the curtain falls on yet another underwhelming Premier League season.
United will kick things off in Kuala Lumpur on May 28, facing off against an ASEAN All-Star XI, before flying to Hong Kong for a clash with the city’s representative side on May 30. The mini-tour comes right after their final league game against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on May 25.
It marks the Red Devils’ first appearance in Hong Kong since 2013 and their first trip to Asia since their 2022 showdown with Liverpool in Thailand.
While fans may be hungry for live action, there’s no denying the club is currently in a slump—sitting at 13th in the Premier League standings and still searching for the spark that once defined them.
The Hong Kong squad, managed by former United youth player Ashley Westwood, is ranked 153rd in the world, but the symbolic value of this match goes beyond rankings—it’s about reigniting United’s presence in Asia, where the club has long enjoyed a massive following.
United CEO Omar Berrada acknowledged the financial value of these overseas tours, noting, “Importantly, tour fixtures drive significant additional revenue which help make the club stronger, allowing us to keep investing in success on the pitch.”
Before the 2025–2026 season kicks off, United will also join the Premier League Summer Series in the U.S.—adding another chapter to their global rebuilding campaign.
Meanwhile, Premier League rivals Arsenal, Tottenham, and Liverpool are also eyeing Hong Kong for their pre-season action in July, setting the stage for a hot summer of football in Asia.
