Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has hit back at Nemanja Matic after the Serbian midfielder branded him one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.
As United prepares for the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarterfinal against Lyon on Thursday, the tension between Onana and Matic is heating up. Matic, now playing for Lyon after leaving Manchester United in 2022, took issue with Onana’s recent comments claiming that Manchester United is superior to Lyon.
Onana had expressed confidence ahead of the clash, stating, “It’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them.” This comment didn’t sit well with Matic, who quickly responded by slamming Onana as one of United’s worst-ever goalkeepers.
However, Onana clarified his stance, emphasizing that his remarks were never meant to disrespect Lyon. In a follow-up statement, the 29-year-old former Inter Milan keeper remarked, “At least I’ve won trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”
Matic, who joined United from Chelsea in 2017 and left five years later without any silverware, might feel the sting of Onana’s counter. On the other hand, Onana, who arrived at Old Trafford for a hefty £47 million in 2023, clinched the FA Cup in his debut season, which has only added fuel to the fire.
Despite facing criticism over some errors in his time at United, Onana’s performances this season — with nine clean sheets in the Premier League — have been commendable, placing him among the league’s top shot-stoppers. But with the Europa League on the line, Onana’s confidence and determination are clearer than ever.
