Brace yourselves, Northern Nigeria — a scorching heatwave is on the horizon, and it’s coming in hot! The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an urgent heat stress warning for Gombe, Abuja, Kano, and 16 other states, as temperatures are set to soar up to a sweltering 40°C starting Saturday, April 12.

After a few days of rainfall and relief, the sun is back with a vengeance, and the clear skies won’t be doing anyone any favours. With high humidity and no cloud cover, NiMet says the thermal discomfort could spike dangerously high — making it a real health risk for millions.

Here’s the full list of the affected states:
Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT.

According to Gayus Musa, the Gombe State meteorological manager, “the discomfort index will rise significantly,” and residents must take preventive steps to avoid heat-related illnesses.

What You Should Do:

Stay in well-ventilated or air-conditioned spaces
Drink plenty of water throughout the day
Avoid going out between 12pm and 3pm (the hottest hours)
Wear light, breathable clothing
Use hats, umbrellas, and sunscreen if you’re stepping out
Check on elderly persons, children, and those with health conditions

“Extreme heat is not just uncomfortable—it can be dangerous,” Musa warned. “We’re urging all citizens to stay safe and help spread awareness, especially in rural areas where access to information may be limited.”

NiMet is calling on local authorities, health agencies, and media outlets to amplify the message and educate the public about heat stress and how to beat the heat.
