In the wake of another heart-wrenching tragedy in Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has publicly apologized to grieving families in Bassa Local Government Area following brutal attacks that left over 50 people dead and homes reduced to ashes.
The governor, visibly emotional, visited the Zikke community on Tuesday, where he addressed residents and mourners gathered at the palace of the Paramount Ruler of the Miango community. He didn’t mince words.
“I’ve been crying since yesterday. I believed with all my heart that we had put the right security measures in place to prevent this — but we failed you,” Mutfwang said, his voice heavy with emotion. “Please, forgive me.”
The latest massacre happened in the early hours of Monday, April 14. It’s just the latest in a string of violent assaults that have shaken Plateau, including a similar deadly attack in Bokkos LGA just two weeks prior.
Despite ongoing efforts and security investments, the governor admitted that gaps in the system allowed the attackers to strike again. He urged communities not to lose hope or give in to fear, but instead to stay vigilant and continue working with local authorities to expose threats and criminal elements.
“You have a right to live in peace. Help us by giving intelligence and securing your neighbourhoods the best you can. We won’t stop trying,” he added.
Mutfwang and his team also paid condolence visits to several families directly affected by the killings — offering not just words of comfort, but a commitment to renewed action.
Meanwhile, Ronku Aka, the Paramount Ruler of Irigwe land, called on the government to back its promises with concrete improvements. “We need more than words. Give our people roads, schools, and healthcare. That’s how healing starts,” he said.
As the state mourns, questions about long-term solutions to Plateau’s security crisis remain — but for now, Governor Mutfwang’s heartfelt apology may serve as a small step toward accountability and renewed trust.
