There was chaos and panic on Monday afternoon when a building under construction suddenly collapsed in the heart of Lagos Island, near the historic Aroloya Central Mosque in Idumota.
The incident, which occurred around 2:00 p.m., sent residents and passersby scrambling for safety as dust and debris clouded the busy Agarawu Street. Fortunately, two adult men were pulled out alive from the rubble by the quick response team of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, confirmed the incident in a statement. He said the distress call was received at 2:16 p.m. via the emergency toll-free lines 767 and 112. Within minutes, responders from LASEMA’s Lekki base were on the scene to begin rescue efforts.
“Upon arrival, it was discovered that a one-storey building under construction had collapsed. Our team immediately commenced rescue operations,” he said.
The two men rescued received immediate first aid treatment from the LASEMA Pre-Hospital Care Unit. As of the time of this report, no fatalities or additional injuries have been confirmed.
While the cause of the collapse remains unknown, the site has been cordoned off by law enforcement officials, and further investigations are expected to begin shortly to determine what went wrong.
Emergency responders have since concluded search and rescue operations at the site.
