Spanish football legend Sergio Busquets has officially announced his retirement, confirming in an Instagram video on September 25, 2025, that his final months as a professional player will be with Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer.
The 37-year-old midfielder, widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive midfielders of all time, will bring down the curtain on a career that spans more than 17 years at the top level.
Busquets made his senior debut for FC Barcelona in 2008 under Pep Guardiola and went on to play 722 matches, becoming a cornerstone of the club’s tiki-taka era. During his time at the Camp Nou, he won nine La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions Leagues, seven Copa del Rey trophies, and three FIFA Club World Cups.
Internationally, Busquets earned 143 caps for Spain, playing a crucial role in their golden era. He was part of the team that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the 2012 UEFA European Championship, cementing his status as one of Spain’s most dependable midfielders.
In 2023, Busquets joined Inter Miami, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. Since then, he has made over 60 appearances, helping the club secure the 2023 Leagues Cup—their first-ever trophy. His contract with Inter Miami runs until the end of the 2025 MLS playoffs, after which he will retire.
Fans and pundits alike have praised Busquets’ vision, positioning, and composure, qualities that redefined the defensive midfield role for an entire generation. As he prepares for his final matches, tributes continue to pour in from teammates, clubs, and fans worldwide.
