Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has delivered life-changing news for dozens of security workers at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

On October 1, 2025, during a public forum at the hospital, the governor announced the conversion of 67 outsourced security guards to ad-hoc staff. Along with this change, their salaries will rise sharply from ₦18,800 to ₦80,000 per month, effective immediately.

The announcement followed an emotional plea from one of the guards, who spoke openly about the difficulty of caring for his family while surviving on less than ₦20,000 a month. His words struck a chord with the governor and the audience, especially against the backdrop of Nigeria’s economic struggles, where inflation has topped 30% and fuel prices now exceed ₦1,000 per liter.

For years, the guards had worked under an outsourcing arrangement that many described as exploitative. The private firm in charge received ₦27,000 per guard but deducted a significant portion before paying them only ₦18,800. With Makinde’s intervention, the guards are not only earning more but also gaining better job recognition and dignity.

Governor Makinde explained that the new structure reflects Oyo State’s commitment to fair pay and aligns with the national minimum wage implementation. “If you take care of those who keep our facilities safe, they will remain loyal and do their best,” he said, stressing the importance of valuing frontline workers.

The decision has been widely praised as a bold step that could inspire other states to review how outsourced workers are treated. For the guards and their families, the pay rise represents more than money — it offers security, dignity, and renewed hope for the future.
