Nigeria and the global Christian community are mourning the passing of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, one of the nation’s most respected evangelists and spiritual leaders. He passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80.
The news, announced on his official Instagram page @Uma_Ukpai, drew heartfelt reactions from around the world. Many described him as a fiery preacher, a compassionate humanitarian, and a unifier of faith.
Born in Ohafia, Abia State, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai faced hardship early in life. He lost his parents at the age of 10 and grew up in poverty. Yet, his determination and faith carried him through.
At 13, during a revival meeting in 1958, he experienced a life-changing encounter with Christ. That moment marked the start of a ministry that lasted for more than sixty years.
He later earned degrees in electrical engineering, journalism, and divinity. This mix of intellect and spirituality made his messages powerful and relatable to both scholars and everyday believers.
Through the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA), based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, he led countless crusades, healing outreaches, and empowerment programs. These events reached millions of people across Africa and beyond.
As a founding member of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai helped unite diverse Christian denominations. His Greater Lagos for Christ Crusade in 1985 became a turning point in Nigerian Pentecostal history, promoting unity among believers.
Beyond preaching, he was known for his deep compassion. He founded the Uma Ukpai Eye Centre and the King of Kings Hospital, both dedicated to providing free and affordable medical care. In addition, he established the Uma Ukpai Polytechnic and School of Theology, offering scholarships and training to future leaders.
On October 13, his family released a statement describing his death as a “glorious transition” to eternal rest.
“He was a faithful soldier of the cross who devoted his life to spreading the gospel with passion and integrity,” they said.
Quoting Philippians 1:21 — “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain” — they celebrated a life filled with purpose and humility.
Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, and unity. His teachings, compassion, and leadership will continue to inspire Christians across generations.
As the nation awaits details of his funeral, one truth remains clear: his life proved that true power lies in service, faith, and love.
