Super Falcons Defeat Benin — Nigeria’s Super Falcons began their WAFCON 2025 qualifiers in style, earning a solid 2-0 victory over Benin Republic at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on October 24, 2025. The match, watched by more than 15,000 fans, marked a confident start for new head coach Justin Madugu.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring in the 18th minute from the penalty spot after a Benin handball. Her calm finish gave Nigeria early control and lifted the crowd. Benin tried to counter but struggled against Nigeria’s organized defense. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie stood firm, making key saves to maintain the clean sheet.
Substitute Jennifer Echegini sealed the win in the 62nd minute. She raced onto a through-ball from Ifeoma Onumonu and fired past the keeper to make it 2–0. Nigeria dominated with 68% possession and 14 shots on target, showing balance between attack and discipline.
Benin’s goalkeeper Adjoa Mondesir was impressive despite the loss, earning player-of-the-match recognition for her saves. The result puts Nigeria at the top of Group C and builds confidence before the return leg in Cotonou next month.
The Super Falcons defeat Benin also sends a strong message after the team’s disappointing 2024 Olympic qualifier exit. With rising stars like Echegini joining veterans such as Ajibade, the nine-time African champions look ready to chase glory again at WAFCON 2026 in Morocco.
