The House Committee on Sports, led by Hon. Kabiru Amadu, has opened a probe into alleged misuse of FIFA and CAF grants by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Amadu explained that FIFA only provides development grants, not infrastructure funding. “FIFA cannot build a stadium for any country. It only gives football development funds, and each federation decides how to use them,” he said. He stressed that the NFF must use the funds wisely to grow Nigerian football.
The investigation follows public outrage over how the NFF managed more than $25 million in grants between 2015 and 2025. Lawmakers, including Adedayo Adesola (APC, Lagos) and Felix Nwaeke Uche (PDP, Rivers), called for a full audit. They accused the NFF of delivering poor projects and failing to account for large sums.
During the televised session, visuals showed the NFF logo and slides labeled “Alleged Mismanagement of FIFA, CAF Grants.” Lawmakers linked the funds to abandoned facilities and weak project outcomes.
The House passed a motion summoning NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and senior officials. They must appear before the committee to explain how the money was used.
Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh joined the criticism. He said Nigeria’s football facilities remain in poor condition despite large FIFA and CAF grants. Oliseh compared Nigeria’s results to Kenya, which used similar support to build modern training centers.
Amadu vowed to enforce transparent audits and stop future abuse. He referenced earlier scandals, such as the missing $802,000 FIFA grant in 2016, still under EFCC and ICPC review.
With AFCON 2025 and World Cup qualifiers near, lawmakers say accountability is crucial to rebuild trust in the football system. They hope the probe will clean up the NFF and restore confidence in Nigerian sports leadership.
