The United States has pressed the UN Security Council (UNSC) to endorse its draft resolution supporting President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace framework, warning that failure to do so could result in “grave consequences” for Palestinians if the fragile ceasefire collapses. Washington’s push comes as Russia submits a competing draft, setting the stage for a diplomatic showdown within the council.
According to Reuters, Moscow circulated its own counter-proposal challenging key elements of the US text. In a statement issued on Thursday, the US mission to the UN criticised efforts to undermine its resolution, insisting such moves could worsen conditions in Gaza should hostilities resume.
The American draft, shared with the 15-member council last week, proposes the creation of a transitional governing body for Gaza called the “Board of Peace,” chaired by President Trump, with a mandate running through the end of 2027. A copy of the text obtained by AFP indicates that this body would oversee political and administrative arrangements in the aftermath of the conflict.
The resolution also seeks authorisation for a “temporary International Stabilization Force (ISF),” which would be responsible for disarming non-state armed groups, protecting civilians, and maintaining safe corridors for humanitarian aid. The force would coordinate with Israel, Egypt and a reconstituted Palestinian police to secure border zones and advance demilitarisation efforts.
Washington has held discussions with Indonesia, the UAE, Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye and Azerbaijan on potential troop contributions to the ISF. However, some countries remain hesitant, expressing concerns that their soldiers could face direct confrontations with Hamas on the ground.
