Gunmen kidnapped students from a school in Nasarawa State on Friday afternoon, heightening fears amid a surge in violent attacks across northern Nigeria.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stormed into the school and moved quickly through the premises. They reportedly selected students at gunpoint before fleeing. The shock and panic among the students prompted authorities to order the immediate closure of all schools in Rukubi for security reasons.
This latest kidnapping follows a series of coordinated attacks on educational institutions within hours of each other. Earlier that day, dozens of students were abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Niger State. Witnesses described a similar pattern of bold and selective targeting.
This wave of attacks follows the kidnapping last week of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State, a case that has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for improved school security.
Parents in Nasarawa and neighboring states say the insecurity has become unbearable. Many are afraid to send their children to school, while communities remain worried about the possibility of further attacks.
Local authorities have not released the exact number of students kidnapped in the Nasarawa incident. Security forces have launched search operations, but information remains scarce.
With the rise in kidnappings for ransom, education in northern Nigeria is facing increasing disruption. Repeated attacks on schools have heightened concerns about student safety and the government’s ability to protect vulnerable communities.
