The Ministry of Education denies the closure of schools across Nigeria, despite widespread rumors claiming a nationwide shutdown due to terrorist attacks. The Federal Ministry of Education clarified that no federal order has been issued.
Spokesperson Folasade Boriowo stated that the alarming circular shared on social media lacks any basis in any legitimate agency. Only specific high-risk schools have been temporarily closed, she affirmed, not a general shutdown.
The statement comes amid growing concerns about student safety following recent kidnappings and violent attacks. While some states have taken independent steps to close some schools, these decisions remain localized and independent.
Authorities emphasized that forged documents inciting mass closures should be ignored. They urged parents and communities to rely on formal announcements from state education offices or the federal ministry.
Parents welcomed the clarification but insisted that more needs to be done. In addition to dispelling rumors of panic, many pointed out that authorities must strengthen security measures at vulnerable schools.
Meanwhile, the crisis surrounding school safety continues as violence escalates in some parts of the country. The Ministry acknowledged the threat and pledged to work closely with security agencies to protect students.
