Newcastle vs. Man City produced one of the biggest upsets of the Premier League weekend. Harvey Barnes scored a spectacular brace to give Eddie Howe’s side a historic 2-1 victory over Pep Guardiola’s team on Saturday Night Football. Newcastle climbed to 14th place, while City squandered a golden opportunity to move into second and close the gap on Arsenal.

The game started at a frantic pace, with Barnes forcing a save from Donnarumma within the first 26 seconds. Both teams created numerous chances in a chaotic first half: Barnes missed a clear opportunity, Foden and Haaland were unsuccessful, and Woltemade forced three excellent saves from the Man City goalkeeper. Two penalties claimed by City—one for a foul on Foden and another for a handball by Thiaw—were dismissed after VAR review.

Despite the abundance of chances, the first 63 minutes remained goalless until Newcastle finally broke the deadlock. Bruno Guimaraes slipped a pass to Barnes, and the winger beat Donnarumma with a shot from close range to make it 1-0. Manchester City responded almost immediately after a sloppy set piece, with Ruben Dias firing home from point-blank range.

But Newcastle struck again just two minutes later. Woltemade’s header found Guimarães, whose shot crashed against the underside of the crossbar before falling to Barnes, who finished from close range. VAR spent almost five minutes reviewing two possible offsides, but the goal ultimately stood, securing Barnes’ brace and sealing City’s frustration.

Tempers flared at the final whistle. Guardiola was furious with the officials and exchanged heated words with Guimarães, while Joelinton also appeared agitated, although it was unclear who was the target of his anger.
