The Benue Assembly has extended the suspension of former Speaker Dajoh after ruling that the Right Honorable Hyacinth Dajoh has shown neither remorse nor respect for the legislature since his initial suspension. The decision prolongs his disqualification from holding legislative office for another six months.

The extension motion was introduced by the Honorable Terna Shimawua (APC-Kyan) and seconded by the Honorable Simon Gabo (APC-Mata), and subsequently passed unanimously during Tuesday’s plenary session. Members cited Dajoh’s continued alleged anti-house activities and a supposed conspiracy to destabilize the House leadership, even during his suspension.

Dajoh was initially suspended on August 26, 2025, for three months after being accused of conspiring to remove Governor Hyacinth Alia. His suspension followed his dramatic resignation as Speaker, which triggered a reorganization and new leadership under Speaker Alfred Emberga.

According to lawmakers, Dajoh allegedly collaborated with former leaders, including the former majority leader and the former minority leader, to plot a new attack against the current leadership. This reportedly occurred while his initial suspension was still in effect, prompting lawmakers to review his status, which resulted in the six-month extension.

President Emberga, enforcing the resolution of the motion, declared that “no individual is greater than the institution.” He added that before Dajoh can be reinstated, he must submit a formal written apology and demonstrate genuine remorse for what the House deemed misconduct.

The extension further prolongs the political crisis that has rocked the Benue State Assembly since the controversial leadership change earlier this year. It underscores the deep divisions within the legislature and demonstrates the lawmakers’ determination to maintain internal discipline.
