Jonathan left Guinea-Bissau safely, and the Nigerian government reassured the public following the military coup in the West African nation. Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan reportedly departed Guinea-Bissau on a special flight along with members of his delegation.
He was part of the international election observer team deployed to Guinea-Bissau to monitor the presidential and legislative elections. The unexpected coup disrupted the process and sparked widespread concern for the safety of all observers.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Jonathan’s safe departure and thanked the security agencies for facilitating his evacuation. The ministry emphasized that no Nigerians are currently being held hostage as a result of the unrest.
The Nigerian government also condemned the military coup, calling it an unacceptable violation of the constitutional order and democratic norms in Guinea-Bissau. The Federal Government joined regional and international organizations in calling for the immediate restoration of a legitimate civilian government.
While tensions continue in Guinea-Bissau, Jonathan’s safe return offers some relief, but the country’s wider political crisis remains unresolved.
