Vice President Kashim Shettima officially opened the 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Leaders’ Meeting in Abuja, emphasizing the importance of regional integration, economic growth, and collective security for West Africa.
In his opening address, Shettima highlighted ongoing initiatives to strengthen collaboration among member states, including efforts to address insurgency, cross-border crime, and economic disparities that hinder development in the region.
The session brings together heads of state and government from the 15 members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), along with ministers, senior officials, and representatives of regional institutions tasked with promoting economic, political, and social integration.
Shettima urged greater cooperation in addressing common challenges, particularly in trade facilitation, energy security, and infrastructure development. He stressed that a unified approach would strengthen the region’s resilience to emerging threats and improve the well-being of its citizens.
Delegates are expected to discuss strategic plans to improve regional economic policies, harmonize regulatory frameworks, and strengthen conflict prevention and management mechanisms. The Vice President also highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS programs, noting that the country will continue to play a key role in promoting stability, sustainable development, and democratic governance in West Africa.
