The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has accused the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, of bias, demanding the immediate prosecution or release of persons under investigation.
Malami, speaking at a press conference in Abuja, argued that the ongoing cases handled by the EFCC have been carried out with bias, undermining the principle of fairness and due process in the Nigerian justice system. He stressed that the agency must strictly adhere to the rule of law and avoid actions that could be perceived as politically motivated.
The Attorney General’s remarks come amid growing tensions between the Ministry of Justice and the EFCC over the handling of high-profile corruption cases. Malami insisted that the suspects should face formal charges in court or be released, warning that undue delays could compromise their legal rights.
While acknowledging the mandate of the EFCC to investigate financial crimes, Malami stressed the importance of transparency, neutrality, and compliance with legal procedures. He argued that failure to address allegations of bias risks eroding public trust in anti-corruption institutions.
EFCC sources are yet to comment on Malami’s allegations, but political analysts predict that the exchange could trigger greater scrutiny of the agency’s operations and strengthen calls for reforms in prosecutorial practices.
Legal experts said the confrontation highlights a recurring tension in Nigerian governance, where oversight bodies and law enforcement agencies must balance investigative vigor with constitutional safeguards for suspects.
This development has sparked discussions among political observers, who see it as part of a broader debate over accountability, executive oversight, and independence of anti-corruption institutions in Nigeria.
