Opposition Accuses Tinubu Government of Weaponising EFCC to Weaken Rivals

A group of prominent opposition leaders has accused Tinubu’s administration of weaponizing Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies, particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, to weaken his political rivals ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, and other political leaders, alleged that the recent investigations and actions taken against opposition politicians are politically motivated and not driven by genuine anti-corruption efforts.

They warned that the growing perception of selective application of laws by state institutions poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and undermines public confidence in the rule of law. According to them, anti-corruption agencies are increasingly seen as instruments of political pressure rather than neutral law enforcement bodies.

The opposition further claimed that some elected officials and political actors are being attacked in a way designed to force defections to the ruling party, a fact they described as dangerous to democratic competition and political pluralism.

They called for stronger safeguards to protect the independence of anti-corruption agencies, insisting that investigations and prosecutions must be carried out transparently and without political interference.

The allegations have sparked intense public debate, with opposition supporters expressing concern about shrinking democratic space, while government allies argue that anti-corruption agencies are simply fulfilling their legal duties.
