The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) destroyed counterfeit and expired products worth ₦10.19 billion in Kano State as part of its intensified efforts to protect public health and ensure regulatory compliance across all markets.
Authorities reported that the products, which included pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other consumer goods, were seized from various markets and warehouses following raids coordinated by NAFDAC enforcement teams.
In a statement issued by the Kano regional office, NAFDAC stated that the destroyed items posed significant risks to consumer health and violated multiple provisions of the National Drug Act and other relevant regulations.
This action reinforces the agency’s commitment to preventing the circulation of substandard, counterfeit, and expired products in Nigeria’s commercial supply chains. NAFDAC officials emphasized that these counterfeit goods not only harm public health but also damage legitimate manufacturers and retailers who comply with manufacturing and safety standards.
Community leaders and consumer advocates applauded the destruction operation, stating that it sends a strong message to unscrupulous traders and reinforces the importance of quality control in products available to the public.
NAFDAC reiterated that ongoing market surveillance, routine inspections, and law enforcement operations will remain a priority. The agency urged consumers to verify the authenticity of products and report suspicious items to regulatory authorities.
The destroyed shipment, valued at over ₦10 billion, represents one of the largest seizures of counterfeit and expired goods in the region this year and underscores ongoing regulatory efforts to protect Nigerians from dangerous and illicit products.
