The Nigerian Senate confirmed former minister Femi Fani-Kayode, social commentator Reno Omokri, and 62 other candidates as ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
During the plenary session on Wednesday, December 18, 2025, senators voted in favor of the list of diplomatic candidates submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These confirmations represent a significant expansion of the Nigerian diplomatic corps in preparation for key engagements in foreign capitals and international organizations.
Fani-Kayode, a former aviation minister and presidential hopeful, and Omokri, a well-known public figure and political commentator, were among the prominent names on the list. Other candidates included career diplomats, technocrats, and individuals with extensive experience in governance, international relations, and public service.
Senate leaders described the candidates as qualified and capable of representing Nigeria’s interests globally. In their statements, the legislators emphasized the importance of strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and improving bilateral and multilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, security, and development.
Those who support the confirmations stated that the appointments would help Nigeria engage more effectively with its partners abroad and advance the country’s foreign policy objectives. Some observers noted that the inclusion of public figures reflects an evolving approach to diplomatic diffusion that combines professional diplomacy with strategic influence.
The opposition urged caution, stating that the selection of ambassadors should prioritize merit and experience in the foreign service, while acknowledging that political appointments can contribute to advancing national interests.
The confirmed ambassadors are expected to take up posts at various Nigerian missions around the world, including embassies, high commissions, and permanent missions to key international organizations.
