The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the new tax reform laws scheduled for January 1, 2026. The student body argued that the rollout should be paused due to a lack of adequate public education on the matter. They made this position known in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, expressed concern that the vast majority of Nigerians remain ignorant of the laws’ details and potential impact. He criticized the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for relying heavily on social media campaigns to sensitize the public. According to him, this approach excludes millions of citizens who lack reliable internet access.

The association also raised alarms regarding questions about the authenticity of the legislation. They pointed to reports of discrepancies between the version passed by the National Assembly and the one eventually gazetted. NANS insisted that it would be irresponsible to enforce laws that are currently under legislative investigation for alleged alteration.

Oladoja warned that pushing ahead without proper consultation could lead to severe economic consequences for the common man. While acknowledging the government’s claim that the reforms are “pro-people,” he maintained that transparency must come first. The group believes that the current economic climate is too fragile for sudden policy shifts without broad understanding.

Consequently, the student body issued a strict 14-day ultimatum to the authorities. They threatened to mobilize students for nationwide protests if their demand for a suspension and thorough review is ignored. NANS vowed to resist any policy that appears to be forced upon the populace.

This development clashes with recent assurances from government officials, including Taiwo Oyedele. The Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms had previously described the changes as beneficial for low-income earners and small businesses. However, the students insist that evidence of these benefits must be clearly communicated to all Nigerians before implementation begins.
