Month: January 2026

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has taken sweeping disciplinary actions in response to the recent deadly attack in Okporojo Community, Oso Edda, in Edda Local Government Area, which left at least four people brutally killed. The governor announced the dismissal of all government appointees from Amasiri Community in Afikpo Local Government Area, dissolved the leadership of the community’s development union, removed all village heads, and withdrew the certificate of the traditional ruler of the area. Nwifuru disclosed the decisions on Saturday during an on-the-spot assessment visit to Okporojo, where he addressed residents, community leaders, security agencies and government officials. The attack, which reportedly occurred on the afternoon of January 29, 2026, involved unidentified armed men who ambushed the community, set houses ablaze and allegedly beheaded four victims, carting away their heads. Visibly angered by the killings, the governor described the incident as deeply disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that such brutality would not be tolerated under his administration. He announced that all development union executives in Amasiri Community had been dissolved with immediate effect, while all village heads across the autonomous communities were removed from office. He further ordered that all government appointees from the area, from management committee members to commissioners, be relieved of their duties. According to the governor, the actions were necessary to send a strong signal that the state government would no longer condone lawlessness or disregard for peace agreements. Nwifuru assured the affected communities that those responsible for the violence would be decisively dealt with, adding that the lives lost would not be in vain. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid reprisals, warning that retaliatory attacks would only worsen the crisis and push the situation beyond control. The governor revealed that the conflict had lingered for years despite several reconciliation efforts and boundary agreements between the affected communities, lamenting that such accords were repeatedly violated. He warned the Amasiri Community to desist from further violence, stressing that force would never bring a lasting solution to the crisis. Nwifuru said the state government remained committed to restoring lasting peace in Edda and promised that government intervention would bring tangible improvements to the area. He emphasised that his administration would act firmly but responsibly to prevent further escalation, noting that justice would be pursued without bias or favouritism. Among those affected by the sackings is the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Amari Omaka (SAN), who hails from the affected area. The governor directed all dismissed appointees to immediately hand over government properties in their possession, including official vehicles, to the Secretary to the State Government. He concluded by warning that those who instigated the violence would regret their actions, insisting that Ebonyi State would not be turned into a theatre of bloodshed under his watch.

Education

  • Students of the University of Jos have been evacuated from campus following rising insecurity in Jos, as tensions continue to mount after recent deadly attacks. The evacuation was ordered after authorities shut down the institution over safety concerns linked to renewed unrest in parts of the city. Students were seen leaving their hostels in groups, carrying their belongings as they moved toward safer locations. The Plateau State Government provided transportation to support the relocation process, ensuring that students were moved out of the campus environment despite existing movement restrictions. University management explained that the decision was taken as a precaution after reports of disturbances near the school raised fears about the safety of students and staff. Officials also confirmed that security personnel have been deployed across the campus to protect facilities while the institution remains closed. The situation in Jos deteriorated shortly after a curfew imposed in response to earlier attacks was relaxed, with fresh incidents of violence reported in some areas. The unrest follows a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, where dozens of residents were killed, heightening fears across the state and prompting urgent action to prevent further casualties. Authorities have continued to appeal for calm while efforts are ongoing to restore stability in the affected communities.
