The Edo State Government has issued a statement calling for peace and constructive engagement following the recent unrest in Ekpoma. In response to the demonstrations, Edo urges calm security protest, emphasizing that while citizens have the right to express their concerns, actions such as blocking roads can inadvertently hinder security operations and expose residents to further risks.
The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, addressed the situation in a statement released on Saturday. He clarified the government’s stance, noting that “matters of security require calm, coordination and constructive engagement.” The statement comes after angry residents of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, took to the streets to protest the killing of a youth by suspected kidnappers.
Afegbua highlighted that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo is fully aware of the security challenges and is committed to finding lasting solutions. He stressed that effective security is best achieved through intelligence sharing and community collaboration rather than unstructured actions that disrupt public order. The protest in Ekpoma saw residents blocking entry and exit points, parading the deceased’s corpse, and disrupting commercial activities. In response, the Principal Security Officer to the Governor, Austin Eigbiremolen, assured the public that adequate security would be deployed to chase away criminal elements.
Furthermore, the Edo Police Command, through its spokesperson Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, is already on the ground in Ekpoma. Ikoedem also reported a recent success where the Eagle Combat Drone Unit helped rescue nine kidnap victims, underscoring the effectiveness of technology in modern policing.
