President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes and reaffirmed his commitment to the Armed Forces as the nation marked the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration Day.
In a statement personally signed on Thursday, the President remembered the men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces who lost their lives in the service of the nation, describing their sacrifices as the foundation of Nigeria’s peace and freedom. He said a nation that forgets its fallen heroes loses its sense of direction, stressing that Nigeria will always remember those who paid the ultimate price.
Tinubu also acknowledged the pain borne by the families of the fallen heroes, assuring widows, children, and relatives that the nation remains grateful for their loved ones’ sacrifices and will never forget their service to the country.
While honouring those who died in active service, the President commended serving members of the Armed Forces for their discipline, courage, and professionalism. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to their welfare and dignity, noting that a secure Nigeria stands firmly behind those who defend it across land, sea, and air.
Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu at the official Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration Day activities held in Abuja. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Benjamin Kalu, and Minister of Defence Christopher Musa.
The dignitaries were led in a solemn march to the cenotaph, where wreaths were laid in honour of the fallen heroes. Special prayers were conducted for both the living and fallen members of the Armed Forces, followed by a minute of silence and the firing of an artillery gun in their remembrance.
The ceremony continued with a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, marking a key moment of reflection during the annual commemoration.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed every January 15 to honour Nigerian veterans of the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, and members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives while defending the nation and promoting global peace.
