Suspected bandits have killed a police inspector following an ambush on a patrol team at the Budo Masalasi border area of Oyo State, triggering renewed concerns over security in the region.
The incident occurred during a routine patrol operation when armed attackers reportedly lay in wait for the officers and opened fire. The inspector sustained fatal injuries during the exchange and later died, while other members of the patrol team were wounded and taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Their conditions were not made public immediately.
The identity of the slain officer has not yet been disclosed, as police authorities are said to be in the process of formally notifying his family.
Confirming the attack, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the Commissioner of Police had ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation.
He said preliminary findings showed that some of the attackers sustained bullet injuries during the encounter and are currently being tracked by security operatives.
According to the police spokesman, the inspector lost his life while courageously repelling the attack in the line of duty, describing the incident as a painful loss to the command.
The police assured residents that security has been reinforced across the state to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and assist security agencies by reporting individuals with suspected gunshot wounds, unusual medical treatment requests, or unfamiliar persons seeking refuge within communities.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to apprehending those responsible and maintaining public safety across Oyo State.
