The Nigerian Armed Forces have announced that some officers will be tried before a military judicial panel over allegations of plotting to overthrow the government.

The military said the decision followed the conclusion of internal investigations conducted in line with the Armed Forces Act and existing service regulations.

In a statement issued by the Director of Media Operations, Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that findings from the investigation had been submitted to the appropriate authorities for further action.

The statement explained that the probe reviewed the conduct of officers earlier arrested for acts of indiscipline and breaches of military regulations.

According to the military, some of the officers were found to be linked to allegations considered incompatible with the ethics, loyalty, and professional standards expected within the Armed Forces.

It added that officers with cases to answer would be formally arraigned before a competent military panel, where they would face trial under established legal and disciplinary procedures.

The Armed Forces stressed that the ongoing process was strictly disciplinary and aimed at preserving order, professionalism, and operational effectiveness within the ranks.

It reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, due process, and constitutional authority, while maintaining zero tolerance for conduct capable of undermining democratic governance.

The development follows the arrest of 16 officers in October 2025 over alleged acts of indiscipline and service violations.

At the time, the military said preliminary investigations linked the officers’ actions to frustrations arising from failed promotion examinations and stalled career progression.

The situation also fueled speculation over an alleged coup attempt, which coincided with the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary parade.

The Defence Headquarters later dismissed claims of a coup plot, stating that the parade was cancelled due to the President’s foreign engagement and ongoing security operations nationwide.

The matter resurfaced after reports emerged of a military operation at the Abuja residence of a former state governor over alleged links to detained officers.

Opposition parties have since called on the Federal Government to provide clear and consistent information on the allegations, citing public concern and conflicting official statements.

The Armed Forces, however, reiterated their loyalty to the Constitution and the government, assuring Nigerians that internal mechanisms remain in place to address any threat to national stability.
