Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has lost his father, Sunday Ndidi, who died on Tuesday following a road accident in Delta State.
The deceased, a retired military officer, was reportedly involved in the accident in Umunede. He was later confirmed dead after being taken to a hospital in Agbor.
Ndidi’s club side, Besiktas, confirmed the tragic development in a statement released on Tuesday.
The Turkish club expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the incident as a painful one for the player and his family.
The statement conveyed condolences to Ndidi, his family, and loved ones, while offering prayers for the repose of his father’s soul.
Wilfred Ndidi recently captained Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. During the tournament, he also scored his first international goal for the country.
While celebrating his headed goal against Tunisia in Nigeria’s second group match, the midfielder made an emotional reference to his late father and his admiration for former Super Eagles captain, Kanu Nwankwo.
Ndidi explained that the celebration was inspired by memories of his father, who often spoke fondly about Kanu and influenced his passion for football.
The Super Eagles captain has previously spoken about growing up with his father in military barracks. He was born and raised in Lagos, where his football journey began.
The death of his father has drawn sympathy messages from football fans, teammates, and stakeholders within the Nigerian football community.
