Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmed Aliyu, has signed the ₦758.7 billion 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to accelerate development across critical sectors of the state.

The budget, tagged the “Budget of Socio-Economic Expansion,” is aimed at promoting sustainable growth, expanding infrastructure, and improving the welfare of residents.

Governor Aliyu signed the bill on Friday, shortly after its passage by the Sokoto State House of Assembly. He commended lawmakers for the speed and diligence applied in reviewing the proposal.

The governor assured residents that implementation would begin immediately to ensure timely execution of government programmes and projects across the state.

According to him, the 2026 budget places strong emphasis on sectors that directly affect the wellbeing of citizens. He disclosed that 41 per cent of the total allocation is devoted to the economic sector, while 37 per cent is assigned to the social sector.

He added that 16 per cent of the budget, amounting to ₦122.73 billion, has been earmarked for the health sector. Key interventions include the completion of the Sokoto State University Teaching Hospital in Kasarawa, the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, and the upgrade of general hospitals in Binji, Tambuwal, and Sabon Birni.

The governor also said the budget provides for the procurement of 21 ambulances to strengthen emergency medical services across the state.

Education received an allocation of ₦115.95 billion, targeted at improving teaching conditions, rehabilitating schools, and expanding infrastructure in tertiary institutions. Agriculture was allocated ₦18.74 billion to enhance food production and strengthen food security.

Governor Aliyu described the budget as development-focused, noting that 72 per cent of the total expenditure is allocated to capital projects, while 28 per cent is set aside for recurrent spending. He said this aligns with recommendations by international financial institutions.

He further disclosed that projects executed under his administration had been funded without borrowing, keeping Sokoto State free from debt.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga, described the budget as people-oriented and capable of driving socio-economic growth. He assured that the legislature would ensure effective oversight during implementation.

With the signing of the 2026 budget into law, the Sokoto State Government reiterated its commitment to transparency, fiscal discipline, and inclusive development, expressing confidence that the budget would boost the state’s economy and improve living standards.
