Former Benue State Governor and ex-Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, citing persistent internal crises and the party’s failure to resolve deep-rooted disputes.
Suswam announced his decision in a resignation letter dated February 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The letter, which was made public by his Chief of Staff, Moses Ukeyima, said the former governor could no longer remain in a party plagued by unresolved leadership and structural challenges.
Suswam stated that his decision followed years of concern over what he described as the party’s inability to address internal conflicts affecting its discipline, unity and ideological direction.
He said the PDP once stood for cohesion, internal democracy and progressive opposition but had lost those defining values due to prolonged disputes.
According to him, repeated reconciliation efforts within the party have failed to produce lasting solutions, leaving it trapped in a continuous cycle of crisis.
Suswam noted that while his years in the PDP offered him opportunities to serve as a member of the House of Representatives, governor of Benue State and senator, the current state of the party no longer aligns with his personal convictions.
He added that political parties should serve as platforms for ideas and constructive engagement rather than constant internal battles.
The former governor said he decided to step aside in the interest of contributing meaningfully to national development through a stable and principled political platform.
He expressed hope that the PDP would one day overcome its internal divisions and rebuild itself around shared values and discipline.
As of the time of filing this report, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party had not issued an official response to Suswam’s resignation.
