The National Police Council has formally endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as Nigeria’s new Inspector-General of Police, paving the way for his official swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.

The approval was reached during a council meeting held at the State House in Abuja and presided over by the President. The meeting was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, senior security officials, and top government functionaries.

According to a statement from presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Disu will be sworn in during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day. The endorsement marks the final stage of the constitutional process required before his confirmation by the Senate.

During the meeting, several governors and senior officials commended Disu’s professional track record, describing his appointment as well deserved. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s leadership style and performance during his tenure as commander of the Rapid Response Squad, where he was credited with significant improvements in crime control and public safety.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also applauded the appointment, citing Disu’s long-standing service, discipline, and operational competence. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, highlighted Disu’s impact on policing and security strategy, particularly in urban crime management.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State seconded the motion for the council’s approval, reinforcing the widespread confidence in Disu’s capacity to lead the Nigeria Police Force effectively.

President Tinubu had appointed Disu as acting Inspector-General of Police on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. Disu assumed office after a brief handover ceremony at the Louis Edet House in Abuja.

Speaking shortly after assuming office, Disu pledged to deliver professional, accountable, and technology-driven policing. He stressed that his leadership would focus on strengthening public trust, enhancing intelligence operations, and modernising police practices nationwide.

Disu, 59, previously served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos. His policing career spans over three decades, during which he held several strategic command positions across Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Lagos, and the Federal Capital Territory.

He is widely regarded as a disciplined officer with extensive operational experience, particularly in crime prevention, intelligence response, and tactical policing.

His official swearing-in on Wednesday is expected to formally usher in a new leadership phase for the Nigeria Police Force.
