The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party to join the All Progressives Congress in a significant political development that could reshape the political landscape in the state.
The decision was disclosed on Monday in a statement released by the governor’s media aide, Nuhu Anka, who explained that the move followed wide consultations with political leaders, elders, and supporters across the state.
According to the statement, the governor reached the decision after engaging key stakeholders and carefully reviewing the political situation within the state and at the national level.
The governor’s camp said the defection was driven by the need to ensure political stability and strengthen efforts aimed at promoting development and good governance in Zamfara.
Anka stated that the decision came after months of discussions with party leaders, government officials, and other political stakeholders who expressed concerns over the ongoing challenges within the PDP.
He noted that internal disagreements, leadership conflicts, and unresolved structural issues within the party at both the state and national levels created uncertainty that could affect governance.
According to the statement, the governor believed it was necessary to align with a political platform that could provide greater unity and improve cooperation with the Federal Government for the benefit of the people of the state.
The final discussions that led to the defection reportedly took place at the Government House in Gusau, where senior government officials and political stakeholders gathered to deliberate on the decision.
The meeting was coordinated under the leadership of the Deputy Governor alongside other key figures within the state government.
Despite leaving the PDP, the governor expressed appreciation to members of the party for their support and cooperation over the years.
He assured residents of Zamfara that his political decision would not affect his commitment to improving security, strengthening governance, and accelerating development across the state.
The governor also emphasised that working closely with the Federal Government would help the state tackle pressing challenges and deliver more benefits to the people.
Political observers say the defection could have significant implications ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections, as Lawal is widely expected to seek re-election.
The move also comes shortly after a ruling by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria that upheld an earlier decision preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising the outcome of the PDP national convention held in Ibadan.
With the latest development, the APC now controls a larger number of state governments across the country, strengthening its political influence ahead of future elections.
