President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally asked the Nigerian Senate to screen and confirm Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of State for Finance.
The request was communicated through a letter presented during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, following the Senate’s return from a three-week recess during which lawmakers handled the national budget defence process.
Lawmakers subsequently referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for legislative review and further consideration before a final decision is taken.
In the same correspondence, the President also requested the Senate to confirm former lawmaker Magnus Abe as Chairman of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.
The nomination forms part of several appointments forwarded to the Senate for approval as the administration continues to fill strategic positions across key government institutions.
During the plenary session, Akpabio also read another letter from the President seeking confirmation of Mainasara Illo as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Anti-Doping Centre.
That nomination was referred to the Senate Committees on Narcotics and Drugs as well as Sports for a joint screening exercise.
Another letter sent to the Senate sought confirmation of Francis Ifeanyi Asogwa as a commissioner representing the South-East in a federal commission.
The Senate President directed that the nomination be forwarded to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for review and recommendation.
Additionally, the President asked lawmakers to confirm two nominees as commissioners in the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
The nominees include Amina Gamawa from Bauchi State and Abdullahi Murktar from Kaduna State.
All nominations were referred to the relevant Senate committees for detailed screening before they are returned to the chamber for confirmation.
If approved by the Senate, Oyedele will replace Doris Uzoka-Anite as Minister of State for Finance.
Uzoka-Anite has been redeployed to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State, marking her third portfolio since joining the current administration.
Oyedele, a respected public finance expert, previously served as the chairman of the presidential committee on tax reforms established by the Tinubu administration.
Before his government role, he worked as a fiscal policy partner and Africa tax leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The economist holds a Higher National Diploma in accountancy and finance from Yaba College of Technology and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.
Meanwhile, the Senate also received the proposed 2026 statutory budget of the Federal Capital Territory Administration submitted by the President for legislative review and approval.
