Danny Welbeck delivered a standout performance with two goals as Brighton & Hove Albion secured a 2-1 victory over Liverpool FC, denting the Reds’ hopes of finishing in the top five.

The Premier League clash saw Brighton continue their impressive form, recording a fourth win in five matches to keep their own European ambitions alive.

Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot, entered the game with confidence after a dominant midweek Champions League performance. However, they struggled to maintain that momentum on the south coast.

Brighton took the lead in the 14th minute when Welbeck nodded home from close range, marking his 11th league goal of the season — his best return in the competition.

The visitors responded in the 30th minute through Milos Kerkez, who capitalised on a defensive error to level the score with a composed finish.

Despite Liverpool’s efforts to control the game, Brighton regained the lead early in the second half. Welbeck struck again in the 56th minute, finishing confidently after a well-worked attacking move, with the goal confirmed following a VAR review.

Liverpool were dealt further setbacks with key absences, including Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker, while striker Hugo Ekitike was forced off early due to injury.

Brighton remained the more dangerous side for the remainder of the match, resisting late pressure despite multiple substitutions from Liverpool, including the introduction of Federico Chiesa and Andy Robertson.

The defeat leaves Liverpool fifth in the Premier League standings, now trailing rivals in the race for Champions League qualification.
