The number of fatalities from a recent armed ambush in Kebbi State has climbed to 13, following the recovery of additional bodies at the scene.

The attack occurred in Shanga Local Government Area, where security personnel responding to a distress call were reportedly targeted by heavily armed bandits. Initial reports had confirmed the deaths of nine soldiers and one police officer, but authorities now say the toll has increased.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the development while speaking during a visit to affected locations alongside the Emir of Yauri, Alhaji Zayyanu Abdullahi. He explained that the troops were acting on intelligence about a planned attack on a community when they were ambushed.

According to the governor, the information available to the military turned out to be inaccurate, leaving the troops vulnerable as they advanced toward the area. The attackers reportedly laid in wait and launched a coordinated assault, leading to significant casualties.

“This is a painful loss. These are individuals who risk their lives to protect our communities,” he said, reiterating the government’s commitment to improving security across the state.

Following the hospital visit, the governor proceeded to the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment.
