The Federal Government has introduced a joint screening system to strengthen security across Nigerian airports. The move is part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and align with global aviation standards.

The joint screening system will allow multiple security agencies to carry out checks at a single point. This approach is expected to improve coordination, reduce delays, and enhance overall efficiency in airport operations.

Ahmadu Danjuma, acting regional manager of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria in the North-Central region, disclosed this during an interview in Abuja. He said the directive came from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

According to Danjuma, the system is designed to prevent unauthorized individuals, including criminals and intruders, from gaining access to airport facilities. He explained that the initiative would ensure tighter control over passengers, staff, and cargo.

The joint screening system combines the roles of immigration, customs, and other security agencies into one streamlined process. This reduces duplication and ensures a more effective screening procedure at airports.

Danjuma also revealed that security measures have been upgraded across major airports. He said authorities have increased surveillance, deployed more personnel, and installed advanced equipment such as X-ray machines and L3 scanners.

He added that regular patrols are conducted along airport perimeter fences. Security teams also work closely with other agencies to monitor activities and maintain safety within airport environments.

He noted that there have been no major security breaches recorded at key airports this year, including during peak travel periods. He attributed this to improved coordination and proactive security strategies.

The FAAN official further stated that efforts have been intensified to keep intruders, including herders and stray animals, away from airport premises. He said intelligence gathering and perimeter security have been strengthened.

As part of the reforms, aviation security personnel will now undergo mandatory training. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has introduced the Basic STP123 AVSEC course for all personnel.

Danjuma explained that the course is designed to equip officers with the knowledge and skills needed to handle modern aviation security challenges. It covers threat detection, passenger screening, and emergency response procedures.

He also confirmed that aviation security personnel have been approved to bear arms. This, he said, will further enhance their ability to respond to potential threats.

The introduction of the joint screening system reflects the government’s commitment to improving aviation safety. Authorities believe the reforms will help maintain high security standards and ensure safe travel across Nigerian airports.

Passengers have been assured of continued safety and efficient airport operations nationwide as the new measures take effect.
