The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention will proceed as scheduled despite ongoing legal disputes, according to the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee. The party maintained its position amid claims of court actions aimed at stopping the exercise.

Speaking in Abuja, the caretaker committee’s publicity secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, said the party had not received any court order halting the PDP convention set for March 29 and March 30, 2026. He assured members and the public that all necessary arrangements had been completed.

He explained that the National Caretaker Working Committee had worked to ensure the PDP convention remains credible, transparent, and inclusive. According to him, the process reflects the collective interests of party members across the country.

Mohammed stated that the PDP convention is being conducted in full compliance with the party’s constitution and relevant laws. He emphasized that the party remains committed to upholding democratic principles.

He also addressed attempts by some individuals to disrupt the process. He urged party members to remain calm and focused, adding that reconciliation efforts are ongoing. He noted that while the party remains open to dialogue, it will not allow any actions that could undermine its stability.

The development follows earlier moves by the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee, which challenged a Court of Appeal judgment that invalidated the Ibadan convention. Members of the group confirmed that they had filed an appeal and sought legal steps to stop the planned PDP convention.

Despite the legal tussle, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has also confirmed that the PDP convention will go ahead as planned. He dismissed the appeal at the Supreme Court, stating that it does not affect the scheduled event.

Wike made the remarks after inspecting the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja, the venue for the convention. He noted that reconciliation among aggrieved members would continue after the exercise.

He described the PDP as a large political family where disagreements are expected. He stressed that the party leadership remains committed to addressing concerns and accommodating different interests.

The minister also confirmed that zoning arrangements have already been concluded. He said the presidency has been zoned to the South, while the chairmanship position is allocated to the North. According to him, the consensus arrangement is expected to simplify the process.

On preparations, Wike expressed confidence in the party’s readiness. He revealed that the PDP convention is about 95 percent complete in terms of logistics and organization. He added that seating arrangements for delegates and VIP sections have been finalized.

He noted that the party expects about 2,500 delegates at the event. He also expressed optimism about the party’s future, stating that the PDP would surprise Nigerians with its strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The PDP convention remains a key moment for the opposition party as it seeks to reposition itself amid internal disputes and growing political competition. Despite tensions within its ranks, party leaders insist that unity and progress remain their top priorities.
