Delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party have begun arriving in Abuja for the party’s highly anticipated national convention, signalling the start of a crucial political gathering ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event is being held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, where party members from across the country are converging in large numbers to participate in the exercise.
Early arrivals were seen dressed in party-branded outfits, taking seats within the velodrome while others moved through designated security checkpoints for accreditation. The venue has been decorated in the party’s colours, reflecting the significance of the convention.
Chairman of the convention planning committee, Okezie Ikpeazu, disclosed that over 2,500 delegates are expected to take part in the process, which will span two days.
The convention is expected to produce key party officials who will steer the affairs of the opposition party as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the next general elections.
Meanwhile, the National Caretaker Working Committee, supported by Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports suggesting that a court order could halt the gathering.
Spokesperson of the committee, Jungudo Mohammed, stated that all legal and procedural requirements have been fulfilled, assuring members that the convention would proceed as planned.
He emphasized that the party remains committed to transparency, inclusiveness, and internal democracy, while also urging members to remain calm despite ongoing internal disagreements.
The leadership reiterated its openness to reconciliation but maintained that no attempt would be allowed to disrupt the convention or undermine the party’s progress.
As proceedings get underway, political observers say the outcome of the convention could play a major role in shaping the PDP’s strategy and unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
