Tensions flared in South Africa on Monday as protests turned violent following the installation of an Igbo community leader, with properties belonging to foreign nationals set ablaze.
The unrest was triggered by the appointment of Solomon Ezike as Igwe Ndigbo in the Eastern Cape, a move that sparked outrage among some local groups who described it as inappropriate and disrespectful.
Demonstrators, led by the March and March civil organisation and supported by political groups including ActionSA and the Patriotic Alliance, took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction.
Earlier in the day, protesters submitted a formal complaint to local authorities, calling for urgent government intervention. However, the situation escalated later as vehicles and other properties were set on fire in different locations.
Some businesses believed to be owned by Nigerians were also reportedly targeted during the unrest, although officials say no casualties have been confirmed so far.
Security forces intervened by deploying stun grenades to disperse the crowd and contain further destruction.
Reacting to the situation, the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) said it had alerted the Nigerian mission, which has since engaged South African authorities.
According to NICASA President General, Frank Onyekwelu, the event in question was misunderstood. He clarified that it was merely a cultural installation aimed at preserving heritage, not the creation of any political authority.
He added that efforts had been made to prevent tensions before they escalated, noting that the situation had now grown beyond initial expectations.
Onyekwelu further assured that Nigerian representatives were working closely with authorities to de-escalate the crisis and protect lives and property.
As of the time of reporting, no confirmed arrests or injuries had been recorded, although tensions remain high in affected areas.
