Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has officially stepped down from his position, marking a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His resignation was confirmed on Monday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, bringing an end to his tenure in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The move follows a directive issued by the president, requiring all political appointees with ambitions to contest elective offices in 2027 to resign on or before March 31. The directive is tied to provisions in the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries.
Tuggar’s exit has intensified speculation about his interest in the Bauchi State governorship race under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A seasoned diplomat and politician, Tuggar has built a diverse career spanning governance, international relations, and strategic advisory roles. He previously served as a member of the House of Representatives, representing the Gamawa Constituency in Bauchi State from 2007 to 2011.
Before his ministerial appointment in 2023, Tuggar held the position of Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023, where he played a key role in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between both countries.
During his time as Foreign Affairs Minister, he was actively involved in shaping Nigeria’s international engagements and advancing its foreign policy priorities under the current administration.
His resignation signals the beginning of what could be a high-stakes political transition as preparations gradually intensify for the 2027 elections.
